In February 2024 a member of the SCCA had their first meal at Abshar a restaurant in Southend, South Croydon. Abshar is a really wonderful restaurant offering a fantastic array of really tasty Persian cuisine.
Whether you are eating in, or ordering takeout, the quality and service of the food is superb and authentic.
The restaurant is large and spacious, and tastefully decorated. It is perfect for hosting an office party and other celebrations. The atmosphere is very welcoming, friendly and family-orientated.
The menu boasts a wide-range of tasty an authentic dishes. Our go-to sharer dish is called Sini Mazeh, which is actually a combination of 5 dishes; 2 hot and 3 cold – served with freshly baked flatbreads – all prepared on premise. You can make requests for how this is made up, but typically it will be; Mirza Ghasemi – tomato, garlic and aubergine, Baba ghanoush, Tzatziki, humous, and Mast Moosir, which is a homemade yoghurt with shallots and garlic.
This dish on its own is probably enough to fill you up, but there is a wide array of mains to choose from, including; combination kebab selections, stews and special dishes, such Abghoost – a special Persian stew cooked with lamb and beans, served with torshi and fresh baked bread, or Gheymeh Nesar – a traditional Persian stew which originated in Qazvin, one of the central provinces or Iran. Slow cooked diced lamb with barberries, rice, almond, pistachio, lightly sweetened orange peel and saffron sauce.
There is a kids menu, plenty of choice for vegetarians as well, and the prices are very reasonable.
Overall, the restaurant offers a really tasty and enjoyable experience and is highly recommended to all.
